Bone Broth (for Dogs)

Bone broth is a pot full of delicious and nutritious minerals and nutrients that dogs love. It's easy to make and:

  • It helps maintain a healthy gut, especially for dogs with digestive issues
  • It supports your dog’s immune system and helps to detox the liver
  • It helps protect joints
  • It’s full of minerals, including calcium, silicon, sulphur, magnesium and phosphorus

INGREDIENTS:
Organic, bones from grass-fed animals. (bee, lamb etc)
Fresh chicken feet
1-2 cloves garlic (peeled and cut into quarters or slices)
3-4 TBS Raw, apple cider vinegar depending on the quantity of bones (alternative: lemon juice)

OPTIONAL:
kale, broccoli, green beans, kelp, parsley, peas, Chinese cabbage, spinach, carrot greens, broccoli stems

INSTRUCTIONS:
Take one of your large pots. Crockpots are ideal since the broth needs to cook over night but, any large pot will do just fine.
Fill it with bones and be sure to reserve enough space on top so that water covers the bones by approx 8cm (3 inches).
Fill the pot with water ensuring that it won't boil over when on high heat.
Add the vinegar and garlic.
Put the pot on high for an hour, then turn it down low to simmer and leave it to cook for 24-36 hours.
What you're looking for is a good jelly-like consistency.

When you believe the broth is finished, remove all bones and throw them away.
Cooked bones should NOT be fed to dogs.
Add the optional veggies and allow the broth to cool.

Once cool, place the pot into the fridge.
Remove (chip off) and discard the hard layer of fat that forms a few hours after cooling.
Underneath the layer of fat your bone broth should now look like jelly (gelatin). The more jelly-like, the better / healthier for your dog.

Store the cooled broth in glass mason jars or Ziploc freezer bags, label them, and place them in a cool place. (ex. the fridge in summer and a pantry in the winter)

NOTES:
If your broth does not look like jelly, you can still use it - just remember to add a bit more vinegar next time.  If you have a lot of dogs, you can simply leave it in the pot and use it directly.

Remember, bone broth is nutritious food (not medicine) so don't get too hung up on the quantity you give your dogs. It's really easy to make and so healthy for your pet.
